The New York Mets are evaluating first baseman Mark Vientos' performance, particularly his defensive capabilities at the position, as the team gathers data during the remainder of the season.
Vientos, who has primarily played third base but lacks mobility for the position, has committed six errors in his last 13 games at first base. During a recent game against the Giants, Vientos committed an error on a ground ball that he described as having a "weird spin." Although the play did not directly result in a run, it is among the factors being considered in winter roster discussions.
Among 40 players with at least 100 innings at first base this season, Vientos ranked 39th in Outs Above Average. He spent Sunday morning working on defensive fundamentals at first base with coaches, but progress has not been consistently evident.
"I think as the year goes on, I’m feeling more and more comfortable with the position," Vientos said.
While Vientos' bat was a driving force in his inclusion in the lineup in 2024, his offensive performance is also under scrutiny. What appeared to be a breakout season with 27 home runs and an .837 OPS is now being viewed with more caution. He has struggled against right-handed pitching, though he remains a strong hitter against lefties, posting an .899 OPS with eight home runs in 104 plate appearances against them this year.
Despite his power against left-handed pitchers, his defensive limitations and struggles against right-handed pitching present challenges for his roster spot, especially since he cannot be optioned to the minor leagues. Vientos is eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason.
"I’m just here playing games, enjoying the time with my teammates and having fun," Vientos said when asked about the potential implications of his September performance on his future with the Mets.
