Mark Feehily Returns to Stage Amidst Health Battle and Lawsuit
Westlife singer Mark Feehily made a surprise appearance at a wedding, marking his first performance since a health hiatus and a lawsuit against a surgeon over weight-loss surgery complications.
Westlife's Mark Feehily has returned to the stage for the first time since a prolonged period of ill health forced him to take a break from performing. The 46-year-old singer made a surprise appearance at a wedding on Saturday night, performing a rendition of the Westlife hit "Flying Without Wings." The performance was arranged by a friend of the bride and groom who had won the special performance in a charity auction.
Feehily had stepped back from performing two years ago after falling ill with sepsis in 2020, an illness that led to multiple surgeries. He spent months in intensive care during the COVID-19 pandemic, subsequently suffering from pneumonia, a chest infection, and developing a large incisional hernia. His absence from Westlife's current 25th-anniversary tour was announced in June.
Last month, it was reported that Feehily is suing a surgeon over complications from weight-loss surgery performed in 2020 at Spire Portsmouth Hospital. He alleges that the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy resulted in a portion of tissue being left behind, causing an infection, recurrent sepsis, and severe abdominal infections. These complications ultimately necessitated the removal of his entire stomach in May 2023. The surgeon, Nick Carter, denies claims of negligence. The lawsuit, lodged with the High Court, is valued at over £200,000, with a preliminary split trial expected between May 28 and July 31 to determine negligence and causation.
Fans reacted enthusiastically to Feehily's return to the stage on social media, with many expressing hope for his swift return to the band's tour. Westlife's remaining members—Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan, and Kian Egan—are currently on their global tour.
Westlife formed in 1998 and originally included Brian McFadden, who left the group in 2004. The band disbanded in 2012 before reuniting in 2018.
