Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has criticized the Trump administration's investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), suggesting it serves as political theater ahead of the midterm elections. The comments came after The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration aimed to build a case to revoke Omar's U.S. citizenship and deport her.
Greene, who has previously called for Omar to be deported, expressed skepticism on X, formerly Twitter, about the effectiveness of such an investigation in addressing pressing domestic issues. "But can someone tell me how pretending to get ready to deport Ilhan Omar is going to bring gas down under $2, make health insurance freaking affordable, make a family’s weekly grocery bill make sense, and stop sending our beloved military off to fight for another fucking foreign war???" she wrote. She concluded her post by stating, "People are so sick and tired of the bullshit."
Homeland Security agents raided Omar's home in Washington, D.C., on Monday as part of a criminal investigation. The Department of Justice has remained silent on the matter. Investigators are reportedly focusing on immigration paperwork filed by Omar's late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who brought Omar and other family members to the U.S. from a Kenyan refugee camp in 1995. Omar and her family had previously fled their native Somalia due to war.
Omar, who became a U.S. citizen over 25 years ago, has been a frequent target of criticism from former President Donald Trump. In 2019, the House condemned Trump for tweets suggesting Omar and other members of "the Squad" should "go back" to where they came from.
Greene has a history of contentious remarks regarding Omar. In 2021, she advanced a conspiracy theory that Omar married her brother to help him obtain U.S. citizenship. In 2024, Greene introduced a resolution to censure Omar over translated comments that spread among right-wing social media circles, expressing a wish to expel and deport her.
Earlier in her career, Greene shared a photo of herself holding a gun alongside images of Omar and other members of the Squad, urging conservative Christians to "go on the offense against these socialists."
Greene's recent criticism of the administration marks a departure from her previous alignment with Trump, particularly following her push for him to release files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She had publicly announced her departure from the MAGA movement in June.
