Marissa Mayer Criticized for Using AI to Describe Daughter
Former Yahoo CEO sparks backlash for relying on her AI app, Dazzle, to write a birthday tribute for her 10-year-old.
Marissa Mayer, the former CEO of Yahoo and an early engineer at Google, is facing criticism after admitting to using her own AI application, Dazzle, to generate a description of her daughter for a school assignment. The incident has drawn online ire, with many questioning her reliance on artificial intelligence for a personal task.
Mayer recounted that a teacher requested three bullet points describing her 10-year-old daughter, Marielle. When unable to immediately provide them, Mayer turned to Dazzle, her personal AI assistant. The app generated the descriptors "empathetic, creative, and an animal lover," which Mayer found to be "perfect."
Dazzle, a consumer startup founded by Mayer, aims to assist users by scanning photos in their camera rolls to answer personal queries and offer recommendations. The app analyzes images to learn about a user's interests and style, though it also shares camera roll data with third parties for shopping and assistance features. Mayer has positioned Dazzle as an "AI wife" designed to help women manage daily tasks and reduce the mental load associated with domestic planning.
The admission, shared in an interview with The New York Times, prompted a strong reaction on social media platforms like X and Reddit. Users criticized Mayer not only for using AI for such a personal matter but also for using the anecdote as promotional material for her company. Many expressed dismay that a tech executive would not be able to describe her own child without technological assistance.
One Reddit user commented, "Wow, I guess she doesn’t even know her own daughter if she thinks this is perfect. It describes a generic 10-year-old kid." Another added, "So can most moms, and they don’t have personalized AI assistants."
This is not the first time Mayer has faced public scrutiny. During her tenure at Yahoo in 2016, employees reported low morale after she made assurances about job security that were later perceived as misleading. In 2017, Mayer was subpoenaed by lawmakers to testify regarding significant cybersecurity breaches at Yahoo. She resigned from the company shortly after its core operations were sold to Verizon.
Mayer remains a proponent of AI, envisioning Dazzle as a tool that can assist with everyday tasks such as online shopping and gift selection. She also expressed a desire for AI to help women advance in leadership roles, noting the importance of diverse representation in decision-making positions within the tech industry.
