Mario Hezonja, once a highly touted lottery pick, has earned another opportunity in the NBA, signing a one-year, veteran minimum contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The deal is reportedly worth $2.8 million.

Hezonja, a 31-year-old Croatian forward, last played in the NBA during the 2019-2020 season. He entered the league in 2015 as the fifth overall selection by the Orlando Magic, carrying significant expectations that his production did not ultimately match during his initial five-year NBA tenure.

In 330 games across stints with the Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, Hezonja averaged 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. After his NBA career stalled, he moved to Europe to rebuild his game.

For the past six seasons, Hezonja played for Real Madrid, where he developed into one of Europe's premier wings. He achieved significant success, including winning a EuroLeague title and earning Liga Endesa MVP honors in the most recent season, establishing himself as an elite European player.

His return to the NBA with the Cavaliers represents a low-risk, potentially high-reward move for the franchise. If Hezonja struggles to adapt to the NBA game, the Cavaliers can part ways with minimal financial commitment. However, if his European success translates, he could prove to be a valuable acquisition.

The signing comes as the Cavaliers also recently extended Donovan Mitchell and speculation continues regarding a potential return of LeBron James to Cleveland.
