Major League Baseball has suspended Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Gabe Speier for three games and manager Dan Wilson for one game following an intentional hit-by-pitch incident involving Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres. The league deemed Speier's action deliberate, leading to a benches-clearing altercation during Wednesday's game.
The incident occurred in the top of the eighth inning of the Mariners' 4-2 victory. With two outs and a 1-0 count on Torres, Speier threw a 96 mph fastball that struck Torres in the leg. This pitch was seen as retaliation for Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh being hit by a wild pitch from Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesús in the previous inning.
Following the hit-by-pitch, both dugouts emptied as players and coaches converged near home plate. While a physical confrontation did not erupt, verbal exchanges took place between the teams. Umpires ejected Speier from the game, and Wilson was also ejected after arguing the call.
Speier is appealing his suspension, and until a final ruling is made by MLB, he is permitted to continue pitching. Bench coach Manny Acta will manage the Mariners during Wilson's one-game suspension, which began Thursday night.
