Mariners Seek Astros Manager Espada Amidst Team Uncertainty

The Seattle Mariners have received permission from the Houston Astros to interview manager Joe Espada, a move that occurs as Espada's contract with the Astros is nearing its end in October. This development is particularly notable given that Seattle is a divisional rival of Houston.

The Astros granted the Mariners permission to speak with Espada, according to MLB.com. The situation is further complicated by the Astros' own uncertain future, with Espada's contract set to expire at the conclusion of October. This suggests the Astros may be preparing for a managerial change heading into the 2027 season.

Seattle's pursuit of Espada could also be a strategic maneuver. By seeking an interview shortly before his contract expires, the Mariners might be signaling Espada's desirability and potentially pressuring Houston to re-sign him. Seattle is looking to rebound after a disappointing 2026 season, which saw them fire manager Dan Wilson following a 76-86 record.

The Houston Astros also experienced a challenging 2026 season. Despite winning the AL West with an 81-81 record, they were swept in the wild-card round by the Chicago White Sox. The team also underwent significant internal changes, firing general manager Dana Brown shortly after the trade deadline due to disagreements with ownership regarding the team's direction. Like Espada, Brown's contract was also set to expire in October.

Espada took over as manager for Dusty Baker after the 2023 season. In his tenure, he compiled a regular-season record of 256-229 but a postseason record of 0-4.
