Marie Watt Recognized for Artistic Influence
The Seneca Nation citizen's work, blending traditional materials with contemporary themes, has gained national attention.
Marie Watt, a 58-year-old artist based in Portland, Oregon, has been recognized as one of the most influential people in art. A citizen of the Seneca Nation, Watt's artistic practice centers on sculptures, installations, and textiles that incorporate materials significant to her community, such as tin jingles traditionally used on ceremonial dresses.
Over the past five years, Watt's work has been featured in exhibitions at more than 20 museums. In June, she collaborated with artist Nick Cave on a large-scale, site-specific sculpture for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Watt also emphasizes community engagement through organizing sewing circles, which she views as both an artistic process and an art form in themselves. "I'm interested in the relationship between part and whole in my work," Watt stated. "There is this conversation that happens when many hands come together to create a greater expression that couldn't have otherwise been realized."
Watt's approach, often working outside major art market centers and utilizing materials historically undervalued by collectors, has contributed to her staying relatively under the radar. However, her influence is growing, with the ICA Boston planning a mid-career retrospective of her work for the fall of 2027.
