Margaret Hamilton, Pioneer of Software Engineering for Apollo Missions, Honored

Margaret Hamilton, a pioneering computer scientist whose work was critical to the success of NASA's Apollo missions, has been recognized with the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2016, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-President Barack Obama at a ceremony in the White House.

Hamilton led the team that developed the software for the Apollo program, a project that significantly advanced the field and for which she is credited with coining the term "software engineering." Her groundbreaking contributions were instrumental in enabling the historic moon landings.

MIT, where Hamilton was associated, described her as a trailblazer who was "ahead of her time," noting that she was a software engineer before the profession was widely established. She passed away at the age of 90.
