Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been formally appointed as President Donald Trump's national security adviser, a role he had been performing on an interim basis since May 2025. This appointment, confirmed by senior administration officials to Fox News Digital, makes Rubio's position permanent and places him in a rare dual-capacity role.

Rubio will continue to oversee the National Security Council process and serve as a direct conduit to the president on national security matters. This makes him only the second individual in U.S. history to simultaneously hold the titles of secretary of state and national security adviser, mirroring the tenure of Henry Kissinger under President Richard Nixon in the 1970s. Kissinger held the national security adviser position from 1969 and was sworn in as secretary of state in 1973, wielding significant influence during major foreign policy events.

Rubio, a former Florida senator, has held multiple official posts within the Trump administration. He was previously tapped to serve as the acting administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) shortly after being sworn into his State Department role. He also served as the acting archivist of the United States from February to December 2025.
