Manzambi's Winner Against Newcastle Highlights Aston Villa's Resurgence
Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi scored the decisive goal in Aston Villa's 1-0 victory over Newcastle, a club he previously turned down.
Johan Manzambi, a Swiss midfielder, is playing a significant role in Aston Villa's current campaign, capped by his match-winning goal against Newcastle United. The 21-year-old midfielder scored his third goal for Villa in their recent 1-0 win over Newcastle, a club he opted against joining in the summer.
Manzambi joined Aston Villa after helping his previous team, Freiburg, reach the Europa League final, where they were defeated 3-0 by Villa. He stated his decision to move to Villa Park was influenced by the team's quality and the presence of a "big coach."
Newcastle fans viewed Manzambi's goal as a missed opportunity, as he had been close to a move to St. James' Park before choosing Villa in a club-record deal exceeding £50 million. His headed goal against Newcastle came from eight yards out, following a cross from Joao Gomes. This follows his recent goals in victories against Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahce in the Champions League.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery praised Manzambi's impact, noting his qualities, intelligence, and physicality, which contribute both defensively and offensively. "So happy he has scored another goal, fantastic for him," Emery added.
Last season in the Bundesliga, Manzambi led his position in several metrics, including progressive carries, shot-ending carries, and fouls won. His performances also impressed during the World Cup, where he scored twice for Switzerland against Bosnia-Herzegovina and contributed a goal and an assist in a win over Canada. A knee injury later sidelined him for Switzerland's knockout stage matches.
Manzambi is among the nominees for the Kopa Trophy, an award for the world's best player under 21, alongside other notable young talents. Since his first start for Aston Villa on September 19, Manzambi has been involved in five goals (three goals, two assists) in all competitions, a tally surpassed only by Erling Haaland among Premier League players.
Teammate Nicolas Jackson, who also joined Villa in the transfer window, commended Manzambi's abilities and potential for growth. Jackson also addressed a challenge from Newcastle's Sven Botman during the match, which resulted in a yellow card despite Jackson feeling it was a more severe incident. He emphasized the team's priority remains securing wins.
Aston Villa is showing improved form, having earned seven points in their last three league matches. The team is preparing to host Manchester City, who have won all seven of their Premier League games this season, following a Champions League fixture against Viking.
