Manny Rutinel has won the Democratic primary for Colorado's 8th Congressional District, securing his party's nomination to challenge Republican incumbent Rep. Gabe Evans in the general election. The race is considered one of the most competitive contests that could influence the balance of power in the House of Representatives.

Evans, the current representative, won the district in the previous election by a narrow margin of 0.8%. Democrats view the 8th District as a key opportunity to regain a House seat currently held by Republicans.

Rutinel, a member of the state House of Representatives, has outlined his campaign priorities, which include protecting government programs such as Social Security and Medicaid, expanding tax credits, reforming immigration policies, and addressing housing costs. He has emphasized the personal importance of programs like Medicaid, stating his concern about potential cuts under Republican leadership.

Republicans have sought to link Rutinel's policy positions, such as expanding taxes on higher earners and advocating for universal healthcare, to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. A spokesperson for Gabe Evans stated that such policies may not resonate with Colorado voters. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a Republican fundraising organization, has highlighted a video appearing to show Rutinel at a Mamdani campaign rally as evidence of this connection.

The general election between Rutinel and Evans is scheduled for November 3.
