Mannings Criticize Officials for Clock Stoppage Before Rams' Game-Deciding Field Goal Attempt
Peyton and Eli Manning questioned the referees' decision to stop the clock with no timeouts remaining as the Rams lined up for a potential game-winning field goal.
During the "Manningcast" alternate broadcast of the Los Angeles Rams' "Monday Night Football" game against the Buffalo Bills, brothers Peyton and Eli Manning expressed confusion and frustration over a clock stoppage that occurred just before a critical field goal attempt.
With the score tied 34-34 in overtime, Rams kicker Harrison Butker was preparing to attempt a 48-yard field goal when the game clock stopped. Peyton Manning voiced his bewilderment, stating, "There's no time outs why is the clocked stopped? The referees are icing him. That's nice. No explanation."
Shortly after the clock stopped, Butker's field goal attempt was blocked by Bills defensive lineman Greg Rousseau, preventing the Rams from taking the lead. The Bills then drove down the field to secure a 37-34 victory.
Rams head coach Sean McVay was visibly upset and seen running down the sideline to confer with the officiating crew about the clock stoppage. Postgame, McVay did not directly address the officiating incident but instead criticized his team's special teams performance, calling it "not even close to good enough." He added, "I'm sick that we came up short and I'll be regretting kicking that and not having a better call to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth or whatever it was. And that's on me."
McVay also indicated he would be "evaluating everything about the kicking unit," a statement that comes after Mevis missed another kick in regulation, going 0-for-2 on the night. The Rams now stand at 1-4, having narrowly defeated the Eagles in a previous game after trailing by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The Rams are currently third in the NFC West, behind the Seahawks and trailing the undefeated 49ers. Their upcoming schedule includes games against the Cardinals, Raiders, Chargers, and Commanders.
