Manning Throws Two TDs as Texas Defeats UTSA 30-6 Ahead of SEC Play
Arch Manning connected on two early touchdown passes but faced a challenging night as the No. 1 ranked Longhorns secured a victory before beginning their Southeastern Conference schedule.
No. 1 Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning threw two touchdown passes Saturday night against UTSA, but the team ultimately secured a 30-6 victory in a game where Manning faced significant pressure and completed 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards. The sophomore signal-caller absorbed multiple hits from UTSA defenders and left the game midway through the fourth quarter.
The win improved Texas' record to 3-0. The Longhorns are set to begin their Southeastern Conference schedule next week when they travel to face No. 15 Tennessee, who also improved to 3-0 with a 42-9 win over Kennesaw State.
Manning's first touchdown pass found wide receiver Cam Coleman, capitalizing on an interception by Texas' Rasheem Biles on the game's opening play. Coleman's second touchdown reception in the second quarter gave Texas a 17-3 lead.
Gianni Spetic contributed three field goals for Texas, and freshman Derrick Cooper scored his first career touchdown with less than nine minutes remaining in the game, extending the Longhorns' lead to 23-6 before Cooper's score. Texas defense limited UTSA to 143 total yards and prevented the Roadrunners from reaching the end zone.
UTSA will host Colorado State next Saturday. Manning largely struggled after his early success, missing open receivers and overthrowing others. He sustained several hard hits, including one in the second quarter that knocked his helmet off.
