Police are conducting a large-scale manhunt for Peter O'Ryan, 48, also known as 'Pistol Pete,' following an alleged brutal axe attack that left his elderly parents and brother in critical condition. O'Ryan, described as an experienced bushman, reportedly disappeared after the incident in Tyers, in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria.
Detective Sergeant Rod Findlay stated that O'Ryan is believed to have first attacked his 47-year-old brother, Paul, after an argument on Saturday. He then allegedly turned on his parents, Janine, 74, and Keith, 76. The victims sustained severe injuries and were transported to The Alfred hospital for immediate surgery. "The injuries are very, very extreme," Findlay said. "A lot of injuries requiring really serious treatment."
Locals have expressed concern, with some drawing comparisons between O'Ryan and double cop-killer Dezi Freeman, suggesting O'Ryan's familiarity with the bush could aid his evasion. "He knows that bush better than anyone I know," one local commented. "He grew up out there and we used to ride dirt bikes all through that bushland all the way up to Erica." Another local warned, "He will be another Dezi Freeman and go out the same way."
Police believe O'Ryan is armed with at least a tomahawk and have advised the public not to approach him. He was last seen wearing a black and mustard-colored jacket and carrying a black backpack. He is described as Caucasian, of medium build, with dark grey hair.
Social media activity has assisted investigators in building a picture of O'Ryan's lifestyle, according to Det Sgt Findlay. Police are actively searching for him, believing he fled the scene on foot. "We are working furiously to try and bring him into custody so that we can make sure everyone's safe and he's held to account," Findlay said.
Despite the severity of the attack, police have indicated there is no intelligence to suggest O'Ryan poses a further threat to the community. Detective Inspector Mark Rossiter stated, "This was an attack on people known to him, family members… early investigations have revealed that it probably resulted after an argument." He added, "Our intelligence isn't suggesting that there are any further threats to the community."
Police have appealed directly for O'Ryan to turn himself in. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, with detectives facing challenges due to the victims' critical condition.
