Police have initiated an urgent search for Gary Anderson, 29, a convicted murderer who failed to return to Maghaberry Prison following a day release. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has directly appealed to Anderson to surrender himself and cautioned the public against approaching him.

Anderson was released on Monday but did not return to the prison as scheduled, and he is now classified as unlawfully at large. He is currently serving a 15-year sentence imposed in 2023 for the murder of Karol Kelly, a father of five. Mr. Kelly died on March 4, 2018, in Londonderry after sustaining multiple stab wounds during an altercation.

Gary Anderson and his brother, Sean Anderson, were both convicted in connection with Mr. Kelly's death. Police are actively seeking Gary Anderson and have requested that anyone with information regarding his whereabouts contact them.

Anderson is described as being approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a slim build and brown hair. The PSNI urges anyone who spots Anderson, or believes they know his location, to contact police immediately by dialing 101 and quoting reference number 555 of 14/09/26. The force confirmed that officers are continuing their efforts to locate him.
