Manhunt Ends for Suspect in Fatal Bridgeport Road Rage Shooting

A week-long manhunt concluded Monday with the arrest of Jorge "George" Ortiz, 57, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in connection with the fatal road rage shooting of Nelson Batista, 48. Ortiz faces charges of murder, criminal possession of a pistol, and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Batista, a grandfather of three, was killed on Oct. 12, just days after burying his 25-year-old son, an Air Force airman. Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter described the shooting as a random act, stating that Ortiz and Batista were strangers.

Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing a man identified as Ortiz following Batista's SUV down a side street. According to a police affidavit, Ortiz allegedly slapped the victim's car, prompting Batista to stop and exit his vehicle. A physical altercation ensued, during which Ortiz allegedly struck Batista and struggled with him for control of a handgun. The city's ShotSpotter program detected at least two gunshots, and Batista later died from a chest wound at the hospital.

Tips from the community, including cellphone video from a witness and identification assistance from others, led to Ortiz's capture. A detective recognized Ortiz from previous encounters, and another individual also came forward to identify him.

Court records indicate that Ortiz was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 1992 for felony murder and was on parole at the time of Batista's death. Batista's son's funeral was held on Oct. 3 in Louisiana. Batista was remembered as a fan of the New York Yankees and an avid follower of Major League Baseball and the NFL.
