Manhattan Dominates NYC Pizza Rankings, Report Finds
A new analysis combining Google ratings and sanitation scores names Manhattan as the top borough for pizza, with one Gramercy Park pizzeria earning the highest overall score.
Manhattan boasts the highest concentration of top-rated pizza establishments in New York City, according to a recent report by Holland Bikes, a bike rental provider. The study analyzed over 11,000 eateries, utilizing data from Google customer ratings and the NYC Department of Health's sanitation scores.
The report found that 60% of the highest-rated pizza restaurants are located in Manhattan. Each pizzeria was evaluated based on five weighted factors: health inspection grade (30%), total number of Google ratings (20%), the proportion of five-star ratings (15%), the proportion of one-star ratings (15%), and the average Google rating (20%).
Pizzazz, a Neapolitan-style pizzeria located in Gramercy Park, secured the top spot in the ranking. The restaurant achieved an overall score of 81.18 out of 100. Pizzazz received an average Google rating of 4.96 stars from 1,057 reviews, with 97.6% of customers giving it a five-star rating. Personal pizzas range from $13 to $18.
Alphabet City's Pop's Pizza ranked second with a score of 79.78, based on 1,324 reviews. The East Village establishment was praised for its high-quality pies and customer service.
Crazy Chef Pizza in Queens came in third with a score of 78.92. Reviews highlighted the owner, known as "Paco," for his inventive pizzas and the establishment's atmosphere.
Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood secured the fourth position with Slicehaus Pizzeria, which scored 78.88. Slicehaus aims to reimagine the classic New York slice with a focus on fermented crusts and unique toppings.
Rounding out the top five is Saucey Pizza Bar in Queens, earning a score of 78.01. The pizzeria offers signature pies like the "Burrata Babe" and "Capri State of Mind." Saucey Pizza Bar also hosts pizza-making classes from Wednesday to Sunday.
New York City is widely recognized as the pizza capital of the United States, with 18% of the nation's top pizza restaurants situated within its limits. This latest report adds to previous accolades for the city's pizza scene, including a February recognition by Time Out magazine which named Mama's Too, a Manhattan chain, as having the best pizza globally. Earlier this year, the New York Post also highlighted Pizza Studio Tamaki in the East Village, another Manhattan spot, for its New York-style pies.
