Manchester United has completed the transfer of midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million, triggering his release clause. The Belgian international has signed a five-year contract with the club, signaling a significant step in manager Michael Carrick's squad reconstruction.
Tielemans expressed his pride in joining Manchester United, calling it the culmination of years of dedication to the sport. "Signing for such a special club feels incredible," he stated. "The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years."
This signing follows the recent arrivals of goalkeeper Karl Darlow, a free agent after a season with Leeds United, and midfielder Andrey Santos, who joined from Chelsea for £48 million.
Director of football Jason Wilcox highlighted Tielemans' consistent performance in the Premier League over the past seven years. "He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United," Wilcox said. "Youri's consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad."
Midfield reinforcement has been a priority for Carrick and the club's hierarchy, particularly after the departure of Casemiro and an injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte. The club had previously been in discussions for Ederson from Atalanta, but that deal fell through. Manchester United has since moved swiftly to secure both Santos and Tielemans.
Andrey Santos, 22, has also committed to a five-year contract, with an option for an additional year. The young Brazilian, who previously moved to Chelsea from Vasco Da Gama for £18 million in January 2023, shared his excitement about joining a club represented by his idols. "As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick, he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams," Santos commented.
Director of football Jason Wilcox also commented on Santos's acquisition, describing him as an "outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch." He added that Santos was a key target and that the club eagerly anticipates his development.
