Manchester United overcame a concerning first-half performance to secure a 5-2 victory against Ipswich Town, largely thanks to a hat-trick from captain Bruno Fernandes.
The win followed a shock opening-day defeat to Hull City, and for a period before halftime, United faced the prospect of losing their first two matches of the season to newly-promoted opposition. Ipswich had taken the lead through Leif Davis and threatened to secure their first win at Old Trafford since 1984.
Several factors contributed to the turnaround. United benefited from fortunate circumstances, including a slip by Ipswich's Marcelino Nunez that led to the equalizer, and a handball by Harry Maguire in the build-up to the second goal that went unpunished. The team also saw improved performances in the second half from Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.
Fernandes proved pivotal, not only scoring three goals but also providing an assist. "Not for the first time, it was captain Bruno Fernandes who rescued his team with a standout performance that ended with him claiming a hat-trick and another assist," noted one report.
Despite the final scoreline, Ipswich were competitive in the first half. Manager Gary O’Neil’s side was ultimately outplayed after halftime.
United manager Michael Carrick made four changes to the lineup that lost to Hull. Rashford and Mainoo were among those recalled, with Rashford making his first start for the club in 626 days. The team's pre-season saw the arrival of new signing Carlos Baleba for £70 million, though an ankle injury is expected to delay his debut until mid-October. United's summer spending reached £155 million, while Ipswich invested £173.2 million.
United started brightly against Ipswich, with Rashford displaying early energy. A mazy run from the England international in the seventh minute resulted in Matheus Cunha firing over. Diogo Dalot also forced a save from Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
Ipswich had their chances, with efforts from Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda testing United keeper Senne Lammens. However, the visitors took the lead when Abdul Fatawu crossed for Davis to finish.
United equalized in the 40th minute after Nunez slipped, creating a two-on-one advantage. Fernandes capitalized, scoring from 20 yards.
In the second half, United quickly turned the game around. A handball by Maguire, which deflected the ball into the net, put United ahead. Shortly after, Fernandes converted a penalty after Cunha was fouled by Cameron Greaves.
Fernandes completed his hat-trick seven minutes later, and then set up an effort for Rashford, who lobbed Scherpen to make it 5-1. Ipswich scored a consolation goal in added time through Chuba Akpom, capitalizing on a defensive error by Lisandro Martinez.
