Manchester United's Winless Streak Continues After Draw at Leeds
Bryan Mbeumo scores for the Red Devils, but the team extends its winless run to six matches.
Manchester United's struggles continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, extending their winless streak to six games. Bryan Mbeumo scored for the visitors, marking his fourth goal in seven Premier League appearances. Apart from Bruno Fernandes, who scored a hat-trick earlier in the season, no other player in Michael Carrick's squad has managed more than one goal.
Despite the draw, manager Michael Carrick stated he had his headphones on to tune out external noise, including a pre-match outburst from Lisandro Martinez. Martinez had criticized the club's hierarchy for failing to make effective summer signings. He later apologized for the timing and forum of his comments, rather than the substance. Martinez started the match but was substituted at halftime due to a thigh injury.
"It felt like a fresh start today, to be honest, with where we're at - accepting it and doing something about it," Carrick said after the match. "I'm not accepting it as everything's great by any stretch. I'm realistic with that. But sometimes you do struggle. Sometimes there's a bit where you have to find a way through."
Carrick acknowledged the team's current league position, which sees them 13th in the Premier League table, and the possibility of dropping further. However, he expressed confidence in the squad's ability to improve. "I've got no doubts that we can go on a good run."
The team's form is the worst since the 2018-19 season, when performance dipped after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed permanent manager. Concerns have also been raised about the team's left-back position, with Diogo Dalot becoming the fifth different player to start there this season, highlighting a perceived lack of competition for Luke Shaw. It remains uncertain if Shaw will be fit for the upcoming Champions League match.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher commented on Sky Sports, suggesting that while not losing at Leeds might seem acceptable, it reflects a drop in standards. "But in some ways that is a negative. We are dropping the standards. We shouldn't really be talking about Manchester United like that."
