Manchester United Not Distracted by Martinez Fallout, Carrick Claims
Manager Michael Carrick asserts the squad remains united and focused despite recent criticism following Lisandro Martinez's comments.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick stated that the club has moved past Lisandro Martinez's critical post-match remarks, emphasizing that the squad's current state is strong.
Carrick addressed the situation ahead of Manchester United's Premier League match against Leeds, following comments made by Martinez after the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. The defender's remarks drew significant attention and criticism from former club captains, including Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane, and Gary Neville.
Martinez has since apologized for the timing of his comments, which indirectly put the spotlight on director of football Jason Wilcox, but not for the substance of his statements. Carrick, however, downplayed the external commentary, suggesting that those outside the club do not fully grasp the internal dynamics.
"Just because people talk on the outside doesn't mean that is the truth," Carrick said at the team's Carrington training ground. "I am telling you the truth. The squad today was in a fantastic place, better than I have seen it for a while. That is it, plain and simple. We are living it every day and know what it feels like."
He acknowledged the emotional investment of the players but maintained that such moments do not derail the team's progress or morale. "We are emotional and care a lot. Sometimes someone says something that maybe you shouldn't say at that certain time, but it doesn't distract us from what we are creating here and the environment and spirit within the group. It [the squad] is not affected, I am telling you."
Carrick confirmed that Martinez would be included in the squad for the match against Leeds at Elland Road.
