Manchester United is reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, according to BBC Sport.
The club has made strengthening its midfield a top priority for the summer transfer window. However, United has faced setbacks in their pursuit of other midfield targets, including Elliot Anderson, who is set to join Manchester City, and Mateus Fernandes, who has opted for a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Earlier, Manchester United had agreed to a £35 million deal with Serie A club Atalanta for Brazilian player Ederson, but this transfer has been postponed. The club is also anticipating further signings, with Chelsea's Andrey Santos understood to have completed his medical ahead of a potential £48 million transfer.
Currently, Kobbie Mainoo is Manchester United's only experienced central midfielder, and he has yet to participate in England's World Cup campaign.
Sources indicate that Tielemans' contract with Aston Villa includes a release clause, which is facilitating negotiations. The 29-year-old Belgian international has been a long-term target for Manchester United, and his extensive Premier League experience is considered a significant asset by the club. Tielemans was a crucial player for Belgium in their run to the World Cup quarter-finals, though he was forced to withdraw from the match against Spain due to an injury sustained during the warm-up.
