Manchester United supporters' groups are preparing to challenge the club regarding its recent clampdown on ticket touting. The issue will be a central point of discussion at a Fans' Forum meeting scheduled for Thursday evening, as criticism of the club's actions continues to mount.
Several fan groups, including The ’58, the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, and The Red Army, have jointly stated that the club's measures have made fans feel like they are being treated as suspects. Manchester United has employed an external agency utilizing automated monitoring to identify instances of ticket touting. However, critics argue that this approach has been overly broad, inadvertently targeting innocent supporters.
Thousands of season ticket holders, some as young as six years old, have reportedly received notifications of account suspensions due to suspicious activity. These fans face the potential revocation of their season tickets unless they can provide a satisfactory explanation to the club. The upcoming quarterly Fans' Forum meeting will provide fan representatives a direct opportunity to confront club officials about the crackdown and advocate for a more lenient approach.
The Manchester United Muslims Supporters’ Club has also voiced its support for the stance taken by other fan groups. In a statement released on Wednesday, the club highlighted the deep connection between Manchester United and its supporters, built over generations. The statement expressed concern that the recent treatment of season-ticket holders is eroding this bond, with long-standing supporters reporting suspensions or ticket revocations.
"After allegations of breaking club rules, while questioning whether they were provided with the evidence against them, or afforded a fair and transparent process, every supporter deserves fairness, transparency, and the opportunity to be heard," read the statement. It further emphasized that trust is built through openness and that the current issues contribute to a broader sentiment that the club is becoming disconnected from the community that built it.
The statement concluded, "We all want Manchester United to succeed again, but success should never come at the expense of the values that made this club great. The supporters, the staff, and the communities who built Man United deserve better. Enough is enough. It's time to put the people of Manchester United back at the heart of Manchester United."
