Manchester United Captain Bruno Fernandes Benched After Public Criticism of Tactics

Bruno Fernandes, captain of Manchester United, has been excluded from the starting lineup for the match against Bournemouth, marking the first time in nearly five years the player has been dropped for non-fitness reasons. This decision follows Fernandes' public questioning of manager Michael Carrick's tactics after a recent Champions League loss to Como.

Manager Michael Carrick stated that the team's needs take precedence over any individual player. Fernandes had expressed frustration following the 4-1 defeat to Como, detailing his dissatisfaction with the team's pressing strategy and the resulting space left behind their defensive line. He suggested that the approach allowed opponents to gain confidence and made the team vulnerable to counter-attacks.

Carrick, speaking at a press conference prior to the Bournemouth match, emphasized that no player is bigger than the club. The decision to bench Fernandes appears to be a move by Carrick to assert his authority and address the public criticism of his tactical decisions.

The last instance Fernandes was not in the starting lineup for tactical reasons was in November 2021, also under Carrick's management, for a match against Villarreal. Fernandes is typically an ever-present figure in Manchester United's starting XI.
