Manchester United Brass Weigh Options After Martinez's Transfer Policy Critique

Manchester United's leadership is evaluating how to address public statements made by player Lisandro Martinez regarding the club's transfer policy. The comments emerged following the team's 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid in Spain, after which the squad returned directly to England.

Martinez, whose contract is set to expire in eight months, voiced his dissatisfaction with the club's transfer market performance last summer. He specifically targeted the Old Trafford board and director of football Jason Wilcox in a television interview. Adding to the online discourse, teammate Amad Diallo posted a message on social media stating, "f***ing disgrace, I have no words," though the specific subject of his comment remains unclear.

The team was afforded a day off on Wednesday after arriving back in the early hours of Thursday, a standard practice after night matches. Martinez is expected to return to training on Thursday in preparation for United's upcoming match against Leeds.

Club officials must now decide on any potential disciplinary actions against the Argentinian defender. While Ruben Amorim was dismissed as head coach in January for publicly criticizing Wilcox, it is considered unlikely that the club would take such a severe step with Martinez. The club holds the option to extend his contract by an additional year or offer new terms. Given that Martinez is a World Cup winner and would be available as a free agent five years after his £48.5 million transfer from Ajax, United may opt to trigger the extension to secure a transfer fee should he depart.

In his post-match interview after the Atletico game, Martinez expressed that he did not believe the club had sufficiently backed head coach Michael Carrick. He stated, "I don't think so. He does his best. You can't keep changing, changing, changing the manager."

He further elaborated, "What about other areas? Tonight it is easy to say the coach and easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas." Martinez added, "I expect more (investment) 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment."

Manchester United faces potential defensive shortages for the upcoming match against Leeds due to injuries affecting players like Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, and Noussair Mazraoui. Matthijs De Ligt recently returned to the bench as an unused substitute in Madrid after a nearly year-long absence due to a back injury.
