Manchester United Acquires FA Youth Cup Star Karim Cassim from Rivals

Manchester United has officially announced the signing of Karim Cassim, a notable young talent from rival Manchester City. Cassim was a key member of the Manchester City side that defeated United 2-1 in the FA Youth Cup final last season. He has also represented England at the Under-17 level.

"Everyone at the club would like to welcome Karim to United, and we wish him the very best of luck," the Old Trafford club stated. Cassim is described as a versatile central midfielder capable of playing box-to-box or in a deeper role, with a developing offensive threat.

The transfer was initially linked when Daily Mail Sport reported United's interest in two prospects from City's academy, part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's initiative to bolster youth recruitment. Cassim's move follows that of another City youngster, David Eze, while Manuel Appiah Boakye from Leicester City also recently joined United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, following his minority takeover, has emphasized a strategy of acquiring top young players before they reach peak market values. This approach echoes past signings, such as Darren Fletcher's twin sons from City, and contrasts with high-profile, expensive acquisitions like Jadon Sancho, who moved from Manchester City's academy to Borussia Dortmund and then to United for a significant fee.

In separate club news, Manchester United has also appointed Connor King as assistant goalkeeping coach. The 27-year-old King will work alongside Craig Mawson, as part of a coaching staff that includes Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.

King previously played in Burnley's youth system and represented England at the Under-16 level. After retiring as a player in 2020, he served as an academy coach and transition goalkeeping coach at Burnley. He also briefly assisted caretaker manager Mike Jackson in 2022.
