Manchester to Host 2027 G20 Summit, Welcoming World Leaders Including Trump

Manchester is set to host the G20 leaders' summit in November 2027, an event expected to draw world leaders, including US President Donald Trump. The Manchester Central Convention Centre will serve as the venue for the gathering, marking it as the largest summit the city has ever hosted.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who previously served as the mayor of Greater Manchester, stated his pleasure in welcoming the US president to the city. This will be the UK's second time hosting the G20, following the 2009 summit in London.

The selection of Manchester for the summit occurred earlier in the year. Downing Street has indicated that preparations will now be expedited, with anticipated involvement from hundreds of local residents.

Burnham, who is slated to meet Trump for the first time on Tuesday, has navigated past critical remarks from the US president. In June, Trump referred to Burnham as "the mayor of a town." Burnham recounted an initial phone call where he informed Trump, "Manchester isn't 'some town'…this is Manchester." He characterized the appropriate response as laughter and moving past the comment.

During his tenure as mayor, Burnham had previously stated in an interview with the Manchester Evening News that he "wouldn't welcome" a visit from the American president. However, speaking to the BBC, he emphasized that politicians often make statements throughout their careers, and the current focus should be on the present situation.

Councillor Garry Bridges, the current leader of Manchester City Council, described the prospect of hosting such an event as "unthinkable a couple of years ago." He expressed hope that the summit would influence Trump's perception of Manchester. The cost of security for the 2009 London G20 summit was estimated at £7.2 million.

As the UK assumes the G20 presidency next year, a series of events will take place across the country. The United States currently holds the presidency, with its summit scheduled to occur in Miami in December.

The G20 comprises 19 of the world's largest economies, alongside representatives from the European Union and the African Union. The group accounts for approximately two-thirds of the global population and over 85% of the world's wealth. Established in 1999, the annual summit aims to foster financial stability and international cooperation.
