Manchester City Stars Return to Training Amidst Premier League Charges
Players back on the field for the first time since the club was found guilty of numerous financial breaches.
Manchester City players have resumed training activities for the first time since the club was found guilty of numerous serious financial breaches by the Premier League. The return to the pitch comes nearly two weeks after the verdict.
Manager Enzo Maresca was among the first to arrive at the training facility shortly after 9:30 a.m., appearing upbeat and offering a thumbs-up to photographers. He was followed later by striker Erling Haaland, who also presented a positive demeanor.
Many of the squad members had been away on international duty during the recent break. Maresca himself only returned to the Etihad Stadium on Monday. Preparations are now underway for an upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield.
Manchester City officially lodged their appeal against the charges last Thursday evening. The charges, which were brought by the Premier League over three years ago, allege that the club artificially inflated commercial revenues by more than £830 million between 2009 and 2018. An independent commission conducted a 10-week hearing in late 2024.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters stated that the club "systemically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade" through the use of "sham" contracts and repeatedly breached duties of "co-operation and utmost good faith towards the League" by not assisting the investigation. The commission found evidence provided by some Manchester City witnesses to be "untrue" and "dishonest."
Should the appeal be unsuccessful, Manchester City could face severe sanctions, including potential expulsion from the Premier League, future points deductions, title stripping, or transfer bans.
As the team prepares for their return to Premier League action on Sunday, Merseyside Police are anticipating potential fan trouble. Reports indicate that some Liverpool fans are planning a hostile reception for the Manchester City team bus outside Anfield. Social media posts have advertised a "Bus Greeting" approximately two hours before the scheduled 4:30 p.m. kickoff, encouraging the use of flags, banners, and flares.
The police are aware of these plans and have confirmed that an "appropriate policing plan" will be in place. Next Wednesday, Manchester City will play their first home game at the Etihad Stadium since the verdict. Former manager Pep Guardiola is expected to attend the match in a show of solidarity. Guardiola had previously expressed support for the club, stating, "We will get through this together. I love you all."
Guardiola will be joined at the stadium by the City board, including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, for the club's first home European match following his summer departure.
