Manchester City Found Guilty of Over 100 Premier League Financial Charges

Manchester City has been found guilty of more than 100 financial charges brought by the Premier League over an eight-year period, according to a report from The Athletic. The sanctions for these alleged breaches have not yet been determined, and the club is expected to appeal any penalties.

A statement from Manchester City indicated that the Premier League process is ongoing and subject to strict confidentiality, reiterating the club’s position from February 2023. This development follows a lengthy investigation that began after German outlet Der Spiegel published internal emails in November 2018. These emails allegedly detailed schemes by the club to conceal income sources to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

In March 2019, UEFA opened its own investigation into whether Manchester City had broken spending rules. The club was subsequently banned from the Champions League for two seasons and fined 30 million euros (approximately $33 million at the time) in February 2020 for "serious breaches" and failing to cooperate with investigators. Manchester City disputed UEFA’s investigation as "flawed" and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In July 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the Champions League ban but upheld a 10 million-euro ($11.3 million) fine for a lack of cooperation.

In 2023, the Premier League referred Manchester City to an independent commission, citing more than 100 alleged breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018. The club was accused of providing misleading financial information and failing to cooperate with the league's inquiry. Manchester City expressed surprise at the allegations and stated it possessed substantial evidence to counter them.

The Athletic reported that Manchester City was found guilty of all but one of the charges. The club secured its fifth Premier League title in six seasons after the charges were initially brought.
