Manchester City Fans Adopt Inflatable Bananas as Symbol of Defiance
Former player Imre Varadi's trademarked inflatable fruit sees a resurgence in popularity among supporters facing Premier League charges.
Giant inflatable bananas, once a symbol of cult fandom for former Manchester City player Imre Varadi, are experiencing a revival. The trademarked fruit, directly linked to Varadi's terrace nickname "Imre Banana," has become a prominent symbol of defiance for Manchester City supporters amidst the club's ongoing legal challenges with the Premier League.
Varadi, 67, has seen a surge in demand for his branded merchandise. "The phone is ringing off the hook," he stated, noting the widespread popularity of the inflatable bananas. The club itself is reportedly planning to order an additional 30,000 units, underscoring the widespread adoption by the fanbase.
"I think it’s their way of saying that whatever happens we’ll be behind the team and the club, and we’ll still be having fun," Varadi commented on the fans' use of the bananas. He described the sight of "a sea of bananas" in away stands and families bringing them to home games as "incredible."
The bananas have become a visible representation of solidarity following the club's finding of guilt for breaching Premier League financial rules. Varadi sees this as a continuation of the fans' unwavering support, recalling past difficult periods for the club, including relegations.
Varadi's connection to the "Imre Banana" nickname dates back to his playing days at Manchester City in the late 1980s. The trend began organically when a supporter brought an inflatable banana to a match at Maine Road. This gesture quickly escalated, with more fans adopting the fruit, leading to chants of "Imre Banana" replacing his name.
Varadi's playing career was extensive, with spells at numerous clubs including Luton Town, Sheffield United, Everton, Newcastle, Sheffield Wednesday, West Bromwich Albion, and Leeds United. After retiring from playing, he transitioned into sports agency, working for Stellar Group for 16 years before establishing his own agency.
He decided to capitalize on the "Imre Banana" phenomenon two years ago, trademarking the name and launching a business selling inflatable bananas, T-shirts, and pin badges. His global sales and partnership with Manchester City highlight the enduring appeal of this unique fan culture. "Some people think I’m jumping on the bandwagon but I’m the original story. I’m the original Imre Banana. That’s me," Varadi asserted.
