Manchester City Faces Calls for Criminal Investigation Amid Financial Misconduct Verdict

Manchester City is facing calls for a criminal investigation into its financial dealings following a Premier League verdict that found the club guilty of significant cheating. This development, described as the most substantial cheating scandal in British sporting history, stems from allegations of "sham" financial deals totaling approximately £900 million.

The Premier League's extraordinary verdict has intensified demands for law enforcement to scrutinize the club's financial practices, potentially escalating the consequences beyond typical sporting and financial penalties.

Lord Cruddas, a Conservative peer and sponsor of Everton, has publicly advocated for the matter to be referred to the police. He stated in comments to The Telegraph that if financial accounts have been falsified and auditors misled, it constitutes a potential criminal offense. Cruddas suggested that auditors would likely involve the police, and that company directors could be held personally liable for fraud, even in the case of foreign ownership.

David Bernstein, former chairman of the FA and Manchester City, has also indicated that "outside authorities" may need to examine the case.

According to the Premier League's findings, certain sponsorship deals were part of a "disguised funding scheme." Under these arrangements, sponsor companies were only obligated to pay a fraction of the agreed sponsorship fees, with the remainder allegedly funded by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment & Development Ltd (ADUG), the club's owner. Further "sham" arrangements, also funded by ADUG, reportedly allowed Manchester City to record lower operating expenses than incurred. Additionally, a "sham" circular arrangement concerning player image rights, involving an entity called Fordham, was found to be funded by ADUG.

The independent panel concluded that these practices resulted in the club filing misstated accounts and concealing its true financial status from auditors and football regulators.

As Manchester City anticipates severe sanctions and prepares to appeal the verdict, the club's supporters are grappling with the implications. The Citizens Trust, a fan group, has urged unity among supporters. In a statement, the group acknowledged the Premier League's verdict and the club's rebuttal, urging fans to carefully review the full findings. The Trust has initiated discussions with the Football Supporters' Association to determine the next steps and their impact on the fanbase and the club, pending the final outcome of sanctions and the appeal process. The group plans to consult its members and the wider fanbase, with a public meeting to be organized in Manchester.
