Manchester Airport Faces Scrutiny Over Flight Delay Rates

Manchester Airport has been identified as the UK airport with the highest rate of flight delays exceeding one hour, according to new research by air passenger rights experts at AirAdvisor. The analysis, which examined the past 12 months of scheduled departures at 20 of the UK's busiest airports, found that 7.73 percent of flights from Manchester were delayed by more than 60 minutes, equating to approximately one in every 13 flights.

Birmingham Airport followed Manchester, with 7.16 percent of its departures delayed by over an hour, and Bournemouth Airport ranked third at 6.99 percent. Southampton Airport was fourth with 6.94 percent, followed by London Stansted at 6.73 percent.

Birmingham Airport ranked second, with 7.16 per cent

Manchester Airport has challenged the findings, labeling the analysis as 'misleading' and asserting that many delays are attributable to factors beyond its direct control. A spokesperson for the airport pointed to industrial action affecting air traffic control in Europe, weather conditions, and airspace restrictions above conflict zones as significant contributors to delays, particularly impacting airports with extensive long-haul networks like Manchester.

Other airports featuring in the top ten for delays exceeding an hour include Edinburgh (6.51 percent), Belfast International (6.01 percent), Leeds Bradford (5.98 percent), Bristol (5.65 percent), and London Luton (5.59 percent). Cardiff Airport recorded the lowest delay rate, with 3.6 percent of its departures delayed by over 60 minutes.

Bournemouth Airport followed in third, with 6.99 per cent of its departures delayed

Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, noted that flight punctuality is not solely an indicator of an airport's overall reliability, citing external factors like weather. He also highlighted passenger rights legislation in the UK and EU, which entitle passengers to compensation of up to £520 for delays of over three hours upon arrival. Additionally, passengers delayed by more than two hours are eligible for food and drink vouchers, and overnight delays may warrant a hotel stay and transport paid for by the carrier.

This research follows a separate survey by Which? that previously named Manchester Airport's Terminal 3 as the worst airport in the UK, considering factors such as queue times and customer satisfaction. Manchester Airport stated that it is undertaking a multi-million pound refurbishment scheme, including replacing old travelators, as part of efforts to improve passenger experience.
