Man Who Walked 2,500 Miles to California Has Belongings Stolen on Arrival

Chantz Rivera, a resident of the Bronx, completed a 149-day, 2,500-mile walk from New York City to San Francisco, only to have his belongings stolen twice within days of his arrival.

Rivera began his trek on May 31, pulling all his possessions in a shopping cart. He documented his journey on Instagram, where he gained over 50,000 followers.

Upon reaching San Francisco on October 26, Rivera stopped at a McDonald's near Fillmore Street and Golden Gate Avenue. There, a bag containing his portable charger and USB flash drives was stolen. Initially, he was not overly concerned, stating he was tired and sick and felt the items weren't valuable.

However, he soon realized the stolen items contained videos and pictures from his cross-country journey. "That's when I got tight, because you can't buy those videos," Rivera told The San Francisco Standard. "That's all I really care about."

Later, while in Sacramento, Rivera was gifted a pair of shoes. He placed them in his shopping cart, which he left unattended for a short period. Upon his return, the cart, including the shoes, was gone. "It was so quick. It was within an hour," he said.

Despite these setbacks, Rivera did experience some kindness in California. The general manager of a San Francisco hotel provided him with a complimentary two-night stay. Additionally, an individual treated him to pizza and offered a driving tour of the city, including a visit to Twin Peaks.

Rivera's journey, which saw him rarely leaving the Tri-State area before embarking on the walk, gained significant attention online. His experience highlights the challenges faced by some individuals upon reaching their destinations, even after accomplishing a remarkable feat.
