Man Who Sprayed Vinegar at Ilhan Omar Faces Sentencing
The individual responsible for assaulting U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar with vinegar at a town hall has reached a plea agreement and awaits sentencing.
The man who sprayed vinegar at Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar during a Minneapolis town hall meeting is expected to be sentenced Wednesday after reaching a deal with prosecutors. The incident occurred as the city was undergoing an immigration crackdown and amid the deaths of two U.S. citizens.
Prosecutors had recommended a 14-month prison term for Anthony Kazmierczak, who is in his mid-50s. When asked in an earlier hearing, Kazmierczak stated he could not provide an explanation for his actions, describing his memory of the event as "fuzzy."
Witnesses reported that Kazmierczak stood up from the audience during the meeting, sprayed a liquid from a syringe at Omar, and said she was "splitting Minnesota apart." Omar's security detail quickly subdued Kazmierczak and turned him over to police, who arrested him. Omar was not injured and continued with the town hall. Kazmierczak later wrote to Omar, apologizing for scaring her and accepting responsibility.
Authorities identified the liquid as a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. Kazmierczak was charged with assaulting a U.S. officer.
The government's sentencing memorandum indicated that Kazmierczak had texted at least three individuals, signaling his intent to "do something" at the meeting involving Omar, but he did not elaborate on his plans. He also made arrangements for dog care and contacted a bail bond company.
The memorandum also detailed Kazmierczak's struggles with alcohol abuse, a history of mental and emotional health concerns, and health issues stemming from a Parkinson's disease diagnosis in 2022.
Omar, a refugee from Somalia, has been a frequent target of criticism from former President Donald Trump. Trump has previously told Omar to "go back" to her home country, described her as "garbage," and suggested she should be investigated.
In social media posts, Kazmierczak had expressed criticism of former President Joe Biden and referred to Democrats as "angry and liars." He also wrote that Trump wants the U.S. to be "stronger and more prosperous."
The assault on Omar occurred during Operation Metro Surge, a large-scale immigration enforcement action that involved over 2,000 immigration officers in the Twin Cities. The operation led to protests, arrests, and the deaths of two U.S. citizens.
