Man Travels 1,300 Miles for Online Romance, Discovers Girlfriend is AI Bot
A Brazilian man seeking companionship after his mother's death was lured by a fabricated online persona promising a new life, only to find he had been deceived by artificial intelligence.

A bricklayer in Brazil, Edimar Rocha Martins, 49, undertook a journey of more than 1,300 miles to meet a woman he believed was his dream partner, only to discover she was an artificial intelligence bot. Martins, who was mourning the recent death of his mother, was drawn to online videos of a woman identifying herself as Jéssica Oliveira, also known as Jessica Fazendeira.
Oliveira's social media presence, which boasted over 300,000 followers, featured videos depicting a rural lifestyle and invitations for men to join her. She reportedly promised to cover Martins' travel expenses and provide financial support upon his arrival. He was particularly susceptible to this offer due to feelings of isolation following his mother's passing, describing his motivation as a search for happiness and companionship.
Martins embarked on a bus journey from Imperatriz in northern Brazil on October 9, traveling for over 36 hours to reach Belo Horizonte. Upon his arrival, he began showing photographs of Oliveira to locals, seeking recognition, but no one could identify her. He soon learned that the woman he sought did not exist and that the videos were generated by AI.
"I had already walked around with several photos, showing them and asking if anyone knew this person, and everyone said no, so I felt deceived," Martins stated, acknowledging that loneliness had significantly influenced his belief in the authenticity of the online relationship.
After spending his salary on the trip and finding himself with limited funds, Martins sought assistance from Belo Horizonte's municipal migrant support service. The service provided him with food, shower access, and advice regarding online scams. The authorities also arranged a bus ticket for him, and he left the city on October 13. Instead of returning directly to his starting point, Martins decided to travel to Tocantins, his birth state.
This incident is reportedly the third such case in Belo Horizonte within six months, involving men who traveled to meet women who were later revealed to be AI-generated. Martins indicated that if he were to return to Belo Horizonte in the future, it would be under different circumstances.
