Chaos erupted in Newport Beach, California, on the Fourth of July, leading to over 400 arrests and a viral video of an individual threatening police. The incident prompted authorities to cite a social media-fueled "TikTok Takeover" as a catalyst for the disturbances.
In a clip posted to TikTok and widely shared on social media, an unidentified young man is seen mimicking firing a weapon and stating, "When I come back tomorrow Ima lay a button all through this b****," apparently directed at law enforcement.
The video, which gained nearly 250,000 views, captured the individual speaking calmly to the camera while chaos unfolded in the background. The Newport Beach Police Department reported that most of the more than 400 arrests during the 36-hour period involved teenagers and minors. Authorities stated that many of those taken into custody were underage or not residents of Newport Beach.
The disturbances began around 7 p.m. on Saturday, with reports of large fights and illegal fireworks on the Newport Peninsula. Mounted officers were deployed to disperse crowds, and other videos showed individuals damaging street signs and looting a local grocery store.
City officials had attempted to preemptively address the expected holiday disruptions by launching a "Not in Newport" campaign, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for public intoxication, illegal fireworks, and disorderly conduct. Despite these efforts, the situation escalated.
One officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a mortar-style firework thrown into the crowd. In a related development, the Huntington Beach Police Department issued a warning about an online promotion for a future "takeover" event, following the circulation of a flyer advertising an "end of the summer beach bash."
