Authorities suspect a 47-year-old man fatally shot his wife and their six children before setting their Michigan home on fire and taking his own life. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds.
The victims, identified as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and his wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, along with their six children, were discovered deceased on Friday. The children ranged in age from 5 to 15. Four of the children were biological, and two were adopted. Their names are being withheld.
Fire personnel initially responded to reports of smoke on Friday morning but were unable to locate a fire. Several hours later, crews returned to the residence after receiving calls about white smoke. Upon entering the home to combat the blaze, they discovered the eight deceased family members.
The investigation suggests the fire was intentionally set in multiple locations throughout the house after the murders occurred. The family's pets also perished in the fire. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
"No suspects remain outstanding and the investigation shows that this was a murder-suicide, with a fire being started after the murders," Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jake Sparks stated in a press release. The incident is believed to be contained within the family, with no outstanding suspects.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools released a statement calling the event a "tragic loss for our community" and offered support services for those affected. The district also provided contact information for suicide and crisis hotlines, including the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
