Man Steals Airport Tug at John Wayne Airport, Causes Tarmac Disruption
Authorities arrested a traveler on suspicion of vehicle theft, trespassing, and vandalism after he breached security and drove a stolen vehicle near an aircraft.
A traveler breached security at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, on Oct. 6, stole an airport tug, and drove it erratically across the tarmac before being apprehended by authorities. The incident began around 5:30 p.m. when the 26-year-old man from Everett, Washington, gained access to the airfield through Gate 12.
The man, who was scheduled to fly to Seattle on a Delta Air Lines flight, allegedly stole an Alliance Ground International (AGI) baggage tug assigned to Alaska Airlines. Video footage from the airport shows the individual maneuvering the vehicle dangerously around the airfield, at one point reversing near a parked plane.
Tarmac Incident and Arrest
According to a statement from John Wayne Airport, the man crashed the stolen tug into another vehicle near Gate 7. He then attempted to steal an American Airlines lavatory service truck before Airport Police Services officers arrested him. The suspect was subsequently transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Delta Air Lines confirmed that it was cooperating with law enforcement regarding the incident. A spokesperson for the airline stated that Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and prioritizes the safety and security of its passengers and employees.
Despite the unusual events on the tarmac, the airport reported that there were no impacts to flight operations. The man faces charges including vehicle theft, trespassing, and vandalism.
