A 44-year-old man was stabbed in the back in an unprovoked attack on the staircase of a Brooklyn subway station late Wednesday, according to police.
The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. on the steps leading to the Sutter Avenue-Rutland Road station in Brownsville. Authorities stated that the assailant, described as wearing jeans and work boots, did not speak before the attack and did not know the victim.
The victim was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. The attacker remains at large.
The attack comes as the NYPD has reported a slight decrease in overall major crime within the city's subway system compared to the previous year. However, felony assaults specifically saw an increase of 20 incidents through June. Felony assault arrests on the subway system also rose by 9% during the first six months of the year, according to department data.
