Man Sleeping in Cardboard Box Killed in Kentucky Cemetery Hit-and-Run; Groundskeeper Accused of Cover-Up

A man sleeping inside a cardboard box at a Louisville, Kentucky, cemetery was killed in a hit-and-run incident, and the cemetery's groundskeeper has been accused of attempting to cover up the crime, authorities reported.

Carl Michael Kinley, 45, was found deceased in a crushed cardboard box at Bethany Cemetery. Police have arrested Brad Brinkley, 40, who allegedly drove his vehicle over the box without initially realizing Kinley was inside. According to court documents, Brinkley returned to the area to check what he had hit and observed Kinley's hand protruding from the damaged box. Eyewitnesses reported that Brinkley remained in his truck with his head down before leaving the scene without speaking to anyone.

Thomas Litsey, 60, the groundskeeper at Bethany Cemetery, is accused of telling authorities that he discovered the body before admitting that Brinkley had informed him of the incident and then fled. Police allege Litsey attempted to shield Brinkley from suspicion.

Kinley's brother, Charles Barbe, described him as a generous and well-loved individual in the community.

Brinkley faces charges including reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury without rendering aid, tampering with physical evidence, and failure to report a traffic accident. A judge set his bond at $250,000.

Litsey was arrested and charged with complicity to tampering with physical evidence. His bond was set at $50,000.
