Man Shot Outside New York Shopping Mall Days After Safety Concerns Raised
A shooting outside New Roc City in Westchester County on Monday night highlights ongoing safety issues at the largely vacant mall, following a recent report detailing its decline.
A shooting occurred outside New Roc City in Westchester County on Monday night, just days after a report in The Post detailed safety concerns and the mall's deterioration. New Rochelle police responded to reports of shots fired around 10:45 p.m. and discovered an unidentified man bleeding from the back of his head outside the shopping center.
The victim was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities stated that witnesses saw two men dressed in black fleeing the scene. The suspects remain at large as police investigate.
The incident underscores the persistent problems at the 1.2 million-square-foot New Roc City complex, which has seen a significant number of vacant storefronts and dwindling foot traffic. The mall, which opened in 1999, was once a popular destination but has faced challenges due to its design, evolving retail landscape, and revitalization efforts.
A report published on September 28 highlighted the mall's decline, noting issues such as non-functioning escalators and elevators, and a general state of disrepair in some areas. Local activists have previously raised concerns about the mall's security, despite the presence of a police outpost on site.
In recent years, the mall has been the location of several incidents, including shootings and a fire caused by a drug lab discovered in a hotel within the complex.
New Rochelle police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact their detectives at 914-654-2270 or the department's non-emergency line at 914-654-2300.
