A 23-year-old man was shot in both legs outside an apartment building in Coney Island on Saturday afternoon, New York Police Department officials said.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 4:20 p.m. and found the unidentified victim outside 3325 Neptune Avenue suffering gunshot wounds to each leg. He was transported to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn and listed in stable condition, a police spokesperson said. No arrests have been reported and the investigation remains active.

Police sealed off the area while detectives processed the scene and collected evidence. Photographs from the scene show caution tape and investigators near the entrance to the building. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or provided details on a possible motive.

The shooting occurred in broad daylight on a residential block in southern Brooklyn. Local law enforcement agencies are continuing interviews and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage. Officials did not provide immediate information about a weapon or the number of suspects involved.

The incident adds to ongoing public concern in New York City about violent crime and street safety, issues that have been central to debates among city officials and law enforcement leaders in recent years. City and police leaders have alternately emphasized enforcement strategies, community policing and social services as tools to address such incidents.

Anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting was asked to contact the NYPD through the department’s tip line or to call Crime Stoppers. The department encourages witnesses or anyone with video to come forward to assist the investigation.

This is a developing story; authorities continue to investigate and no additional information has been released.
