Man Shot During Trump Rally Assassination Attempt Dies

James Copenhaver, 76, who was shot during an assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a 2024 campaign rally, has died. His family's attorney confirmed his death on Thursday, stating he passed away on Wednesday surrounded by loved ones.

Copenhaver was one of three attendees struck by gunfire when a gunman opened fire at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. He had been "gravely wounded" in the shooting. His family attorney, Joseph Feldman, said Copenhaver faced his challenges with strength and resolve, and that the support from many people provided comfort.

The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support received over the past two years. Copenhaver is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a veteran whose dedication to the country was a defining aspect of his life.

Copenhaver died at a Pittsburgh hospital, the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed. The cause and manner of his death are pending.

Donald Trump called Copenhaver a "true American Patriot" in a statement, describing his death as a "tremendous loss" and stating his legacy of love and devotion will endure.

House Republicans issued a statement Thursday, noting Copenhaver's strength and perseverance through hardship. They extended condolences to his family and loved ones.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also offered his condolences. He reiterated that the political violence at the July 13, 2024, event was unacceptable and urged a collective responsibility to de-escalate rhetoric and seek a better future.

Two other individuals were injured in the attack. Firefighter Corey Comperatore died at the scene after shielding his family. Former Marine David Dutch was shot in the chest and liver and was initially in a medically induced coma. Trump himself was grazed in the ear by a bullet.

The gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired shots from the roof of a nearby building before being killed by a Secret Service sharpshooter.
