Man Shot at Trump Rally Dies

James Copenhaver, one of three attendees shot during a 2024 campaign rally for then-candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. He was 76.

Copenhaver died Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to his lawyer, Joseph Feldman. Copenhaver was in the bleachers when a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop. The shooter’s bullets grazed Trump’s ear and struck Copenhaver in the arm and abdomen. The attack also killed fellow attendee Corey Comperatore, who had shielded his family.

The injuries Copenhaver sustained required multiple surgeries and resulted in lingering physical challenges, including the need for a cane. His lawyer previously described the wounds as “debilitating, grievous, permanent and life altering.”

In June, Copenhaver and his wife sued the federal government, alleging that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security at the rally. The lawsuit detailed the severity of his injuries, including a transected colon and resulting kidney damage.

Feldman issued a statement on behalf of the family, calling Copenhaver a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who instilled values of hard work, integrity, and service. The statement noted his pride in serving in the armed forces and his strong belief in American patriotism and its founding ideals.

Donald Trump posted a statement on social media Thursday, calling Copenhaver “a true American Patriot” and noting his bravery and positive spirit despite his hardships.
