A man was fatally shot by police on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica after he charged at officers with a knife. The incident took place in the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue, near the Santa Monica Pier.
According to Santa Monica Police Lt. Lewis Gilmour, officers were investigating a reported domestic violence incident when the man approached them with a large kitchen-style knife. Police stated the man was not involved in the domestic violence call and appeared to be acting independently when he ran at the officers with the knife raised. One officer discharged their weapon, striking the man.
Emergency responders attempted to save the man's life, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Gilmour described the deceased as being in his late 40s. No officers were injured during the encounter.
The scene was secured for evidence collection and the preliminary investigation. Police indicated that body-worn camera footage of the incident would be released at a later time. The public was advised to avoid the area.
