Michael Thompson has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 33 years for the murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson. The court found that Thompson killed his wife at their home and then staged the scene to make it appear as a suicide.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Thompson made a "concerted attempt to conceal" his actions and create a false scene to mislead the police. Evidence presented indicated that he feigned distress and performed CPR in a bid to cover up the murder. The prosecution stated, "You were literally trying to get away with murder."
Thompson's estranged wife had reportedly started a new relationship and was planning to move out. She had also requested approximately £65,000 as part of a divorce settlement. Jurors were informed that social media posts shared by Kimberley Thompson in the early hours of the day she died, suggesting she had "drank too much," raised suspicions among her friends and family due to a spelling error and phrasing that was uncharacteristic of her usual communication style.
Kimberley Thompson is described as an accomplished, valued, and loved woman who adored her children and was anticipating a new chapter in her life. The court heard that Thompson's actions deprived her of this future and deprived her children of their mother, as well as depriving others of a sister and a friend.
The couple's daughter, Athena, who appeared via video-link from the US, addressed the court, calling her father a "jealous, conniving, narcissistic villain." She spoke of the profound pain her father's actions caused, stating, "The day you killed my mother, you killed me too. I feel I will never be happy again." She expressed her determination to honor her mother and not be defeated by the tragedy.
