Michael Thompson, 56, has been sentenced to a minimum of 33 years in prison for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, 43. A jury found Thompson guilty of suffocating his estranged wife in their marital home last August and attempting to stage the scene to appear as a suicide. Thompson, a former amateur boxer, was also convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that Thompson was motivated by anger over his estranged wife's new relationship and demands for an "inflated" divorce settlement. He claimed that the couple had engaged in consensual sex before Mrs. Thompson died from an overdose of pills, but the jury rejected this narrative. Evidence presented at trial suggested Thompson had been watching sexually explicit videos while agitated about his wife's new partner before committing the murder.

Following the guilty verdicts, authorities re-examined the death of Rhonda Anderson, another former partner of Thompson, who died in suspicious circumstances in July 2000. Anderson, 29, was found electrocuted in her bath with an electric radio in the water. Thompson was arrested on suspicion of Anderson's murder, but Northamptonshire Police have since closed the investigation due to insufficient evidence.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC sentenced Thompson, describing his actions as cowardly and contemptuous, noting his voluntary absence from court to hear the sentence. The judge stated that Thompson "set about creating a false scene to confuse the police, constructing a scene that she had taken her own life." He added, "You were literally trying to get away with murder."

Kimberley Thompson, a civil servant and award-winning basketball coach, was found dead in the marital home on August 9, 2025. The couple had been sleeping in separate bedrooms as their divorce was being finalized. The initial police response treated the scene as a potential drink and drugs incident or suicide attempt, allowing Thompson to clean up evidence. However, toxicology reports later indicated Mrs. Thompson had not been drinking and had only low levels of codeine and paracetamol in her blood. A pathologist determined she died from smothering due to external airway obstruction.

Prosecutors argued that Thompson attempted to cover up the rape by sending a text message from his wife's phone suggesting she wanted sex, and placed bottles of alcohol and empty pill packets to suggest suicide. Evidence emerged that Mrs. Thompson had confided in friends about experiencing physical, emotional abuse, and controlling behavior from Thompson over the years, and had previously sought help from a domestic violence unit. She had reportedly told a friend, "If anything happens to me. Please know it was him."

Thompson also engaged in obsessive behavior, including recording his estranged wife's phone calls and tracking her movements. On the night of her death, he sent messages from her phone that contained uncharacteristic typos, which alerted investigators. Empty strips of co-codamol tablets and bottles of gin and vodka were found in the bedroom where her body was discovered. A wedding photo of the couple and a montage of Mrs. Thompson's late sister, who had died by suicide, were also present on the bed.

Mrs. Thompson's 18-year-old daughter, Athena, who is studying and playing basketball in the US, delivered a victim impact statement via videolink. She described her mother as a loving and kind person and stated that losing her mother in such a violent manner had "completely destroyed my world," leaving her feeling there was "no point in living."

Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit highlighted that Mrs. Thompson had been subjected to domestic abuse, manipulation, coercive control, and physical violence throughout much of her relationship with Thompson, which had eroded her confidence. DCI Harrison urged anyone experiencing similar situations to seek help.

Regarding Rhonda Anderson's death, DCI Harrison stated that while an inquest initially ruled it accidental, concerns raised in light of Kimberley Thompson's murder prompted a fresh investigation. This investigation concluded with insufficient evidence to proceed further against Michael Thompson.
