Man Released Without Bail After Allegedly Slicing Victim With Box Cutter, Exposing Intestines

A man accused of brutally slashing another person with a box cutter on the Upper East Side, causing the victim's intestines to protrude, has been released without bail. Antonio Bonifacaio, 34, faces charges including first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Tuesday outside the Fresh Food Farm grocery store at East 69th Street and Second Avenue. Police stated the fight involved three men, but the catalyst for the altercation remains unclear.

According to court documents, Bonifacaio allegedly used a box cutter to inflict a six-inch gash on the victim's abdomen, resulting in visible intestinal protrusion. The victim also sustained cuts to his hands. Emergency medical services transported the victim to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition. He has since undergone surgery and is reported to be in stable condition.

Bonifacaio pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. Prosecutors had requested bail be set at $100,000 cash or a higher bond. However, Judge Sheridan Jack-Browne released Bonifacaio on his own recognizance. His next court appearance is scheduled for November.

Jack-Browne, a Democrat elected in 2025, has faced scrutiny in the past. Court records indicate she was not approved by the New York City Bar Association for her position due to not meeting the qualifications for the role. She was previously involved in a case where she released Gerardo Miguel Mora, a deported felon with a history of arrests, including for attempted rape and drug possession. At the time, court officials stated she was not notified of a federal warrant for Mora, though the NYPD contested this, suggesting the information should have been apparent in the case file.

Eddy Idrovo Chamba, 25, who is also identified as homeless, was also charged with assault in connection with the incident.
