A man pushed a 65-year-old woman onto the subway tracks in an apparent random attack Thursday afternoon in the Bronx, according to police and sources. The incident occurred around 1:40 p.m. on the northbound No. 5 train platform at East 180th Street and Morris Park Avenue in Van Nest.
Police said the suspect approached the woman from behind and shoved her onto the tracks. A bystander alerted law enforcement officers who were conducting a station inspection. The officers assisted the woman back onto the platform. She was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition with knee injuries. Authorities stated the victim and the suspect had no apparent connection.
Following the incident, the man reportedly went to a psychiatric clinic and told employees he had pushed someone onto the subway tracks, requesting an evaluation. He was taken into police custody on Friday and is currently undergoing evaluation at the facility. Charges against him are pending, according to sources.
